1/4/2024 0 Comments Caprine encephalitis![]() To prevent spread of the disease, infected animals are separated from non-infected goats, or culled. Blood testing goats for CAE virus before moving them into a new herd will prevent the spread of the disease. The disease can be spread from goat to goat via direct contact and body fluids, such as saliva. Separating goat kids from infected goats, and feeding the kids with cow's milk, or pasteurized goat milk, will prevent infection. The disease is spread to goat kids when they drink colostrum or milk from infected goats. The goat has increased difficulty standing and eventually is unable to stand. The goat will be uncoordinated, and unable to place its feet properly, so that it "knuckles", that is, it stands with the front of its fetlock on the ground, rather than its hoof. In goats which develop the neurological form of the disease, the onset of signs is gradual over several weeks. In some cases the goat will not be able to stand. In goats which develop arthritis, the joints become inflamed and swollen, and the goats will slowly lose condition. The reason for the long (and variable) period of dormancy of the virus is not known. Infection is life-long, and it may be years before signs of the disease occur. Less commonly, mastitis or pneumonia may occur. Adult goats develop a chronic progressive arthritis, whereas young goats develop a neurological syndrome, with signs of paresis or paralysis. Caprine arthritis encephalitis (CAE) is a viral disease of goats caused by a lentivirus called caprine arthritis encephalitis virus. Further investigations need to be done to explore the seroconversion of CAEV in small ruminants and the associated factors to plan an appropriate eradication program and prevent transmission.Caprine arthritis encephalitis (CAE) is a viral disease of goats caused by a lentivirus called caprine arthritis encephalitis virus. This disease poses serious animal health problems that constrain production with the presence of apparent clinical signs. There has been a significant difference (p 0.05) of goats.Ĭonclusion: This finding indicates that CAEV infection exists in the goat flocks in examined localities in Ethiopia. The overall seroprevalence of CAE was 4.7%. Of the total samples tested from clinical cases, 7 (58.3%) were sero-positive for the presence of antibodies against CAEV. Chronic pneumonia was the highest cause of goat morbidity (50.8%) and mortality (100.0%). Results: During five consecutive years of longitudinal clinical study, a total of 195 clinical diseases of chronic pneumonia, nerve problems, clinical mastitis, and arthritis occurred with prevalence of 99 (50.8%), 57 (29.2%), 27 (13.9%), and 12 (6.2%), respectively. Records have been statistically analyzed by using the chi-square test. A total of 257 serum samples have been collected from apparently health and clinical cases attributed to CAE infection and tested with the usage of indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays to screen antibodies against CAE. Methods: A cross-sectional serological study and a longitudinal clinical case study were conducted. ![]() The present study was conducted to determine the rate of morbidity and mortality due to clinical diseases attributed to infection by Caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) and to determine the serological status of CAEV in goat in North Shewa, Ethiopia. It is mainly manifested as encephalitis in kids and polyarthritis in adult goats. Introduction: Caprine arthritis encephalitis (CAE) is a chronic debilitating and economically important viral disease of goats. Only a proportion develop clinical disease months to years later. Most goats acquire the infection at an early age and they remain infected for life. CAE virus infection is widespread in dairy goat breeds.
